George Mason's flagship student learning center, the George W. Johnson Center, was named for George Mason University's president of 18 years. The first building of its kind on an American campus, the Johnson Center is designed to be the hub of campus - sometimes dubbed the "New Quad" - and has a unique, multifaceted mission: to provide students with a total learning experience through interaction with books, technology, peers, faculty, and staff.

Here are just some of the key features of the Johnson Center:

The $30 million building combines a 100,000-quare-foot, state-of-the-art open space library facility with the meeting, programming, and food service space.

The building features a new technology enhanced library with 100,000 volumes, supporting the core curriculum.

Four 25-station multiuse computer labs.

More than 700 lockers for students to store stuff.

The new 310-seat Cinema, managed by the Institute of the Arts.

The Johnson Center is 320,000 gross square feet, which translates into 8 acres of floor space, two acres per floor.

A 35 seat instruction room dedicated to training students to use the computerized library resources.

The course materials store, convenience store, computer store, United Bank, and Apple Federal Credit Union.

Study lounge and table seating for 2,200 throughout the building, including 900 library table seats, 250 food court seats on the atrium floor, table and lounge seating overlooking the atrium on each level, and 22 study/meeting lounges with access to both power and the campuswide data network.
